South-east coastal regions and adjacent ranges to summit ridges of Great Dividing Range, north to Wide Bay and Fraser Is., QLD, and south-west and west to Kangaroo Is. and Streaky Bay, Eyre Peninsula, SA—also TAS and Bass Strait islands, rare vagrant to Lord Howe Is.

Randomly dispersed, seasonal breeder, sexually dimorphic, feeds on ground on seeds in heaths and dense shrubberies, with or without overtopping sclerophyll forest, flies with even wing-beats, nests on or near ground in or under low bushes and trees, sedentary or wanders locally to seasonal food sources.
