Upper Victoria and Baines River drainages, north to Stokes Range, west at least to Waterloo Station, and east to Delamere—south-eastern and south-western limits not established.

Randomly dispersed, seasonal breeder, ground-living seed-eater on rock sheets, rock faces and adjacent alluvium of low ranges and tumbled breakaways, flies with clattering flap-and-glide flight, roosts and nests on rock ledges and crevices, and shifts locally to food and water.
