Tribe Pentastirini Emeljanov, 1971

Compiler and date details

3 September 2010 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

The tribe Pentastirini Emeljanov is represented in all zoogeographical regions with more than 35 genera with several hundred species. Serious pest species transmit phytoplasma diseases such as Phormium yellows in New Zealand, transmitted by Zeoliarus atkinsoni (Myers), and vergilbungskrankheit in Germany, transmitted by Hyalesthes obsoletus Signoret, which also transmits Bois noir (black wood) of grapevines and stolbur disease of potato and tomato in Europe.

The tribe was divided into the subtribes Oliarina and Pentastirina by Emeljanov (1971) and Mnemosynina was added by Emeljanov (1992). However, Mnemosynina was raised to tribe by Szwedo (2004) and Holzinger et al. (2002) synonymised the other two subtribes so there is currently no subtribe defined within the Pentastirini.
