Diagnosis
Carapace triangular to subcircular; surface of carapace granulate or eroded to varying degrees; lateral edges of carapace never clypeiform, ambulatory legs visible from dorsal view; branchial regions usually swollen and distinctly separated from convex gastric and cardiac regions; rostrum simple or more or less trilobed; eyes small, retract into small, circular orbits. Basal antennal article small, never reaching more than half length of basal antennular segment, never filling orbital hiatus. Buccal cavity subrectangular, not spout-like. Merus of third maxilliped quadrate to subquadrate; exopod positioned adjacent to endopod, clearly visible from frontal view. Chelipeds robust, very elongate to short, longer than walking legs; walking legs slender. Sutures between thoracic sternites 4-8 interrupted medially to varying degrees; or with sutures 4/5 and 5/6 interrupted, 6/7 and 7/8 complete. Lateral margins of male abdominal segments 3–6 usually converging towards telson, with segments appearing triangular. Male first gonopod more or less stout, tapering or not; second gonopod usually short but sometimes equal to, or even slightly longer than, first; distal segment variable in length.
