Syntype(s) BMNH (BMNH 1 specimen bottle label indicates identified by Hansen as mastigopus stage of Sergestes vigilax; BMNH 1 specimen (bottle label indicates identified by Hansen as probably Sergestes oculatus or S. incertus; T. Kikuchi (in litt.) has reported examining the two remaining syntypes and believes them to be impossible to identify to species), Atlantic Ocean, Hawai'i (as Sandwich Islands), Sydney and Wellington, Teneriffe to St. Thomas, Canary Islands, NE Atlantic (Challenger Expedition), Cape York (Challenger Expedition).
