Diagnosis

In lateral view valves elongate-ovate, in dorsal view compressed laterally; height greatest behind middle. Dorsal margin convex; ventral margin variable, generally slightly concave anteriorly and convex posteriorly. Anterior end acutely rounded below; posterior end with more or less pronounced caudal process situated normally above middle. Valves thinly calcified, fragile, transparent, smooth. Inner lamella moderately wide anteriorly, narrower elsewhere. Marginal zone very narrow throughout, line of concrescence not coinciding with inner margin except for short distance anteroventrally in some species. Marginal pore canals few, short, simple, more or less evenly spaced, often not entirely reaching outer margin. Hinge merodont/lophodont. Normal pores few, open.
