Family PARADOXOSTOMATIDAE Brady & Norman, 1889

Diagnosis

Valves weakly calcified, usually smooth. Carapace elongate, laterally compressed. Fused zone narrow. Line of concrescence and inner margin separated, and large vestibule present at valve ends. Marginal pore canals sparse. Normal pore canals simple. Hinge adont, rectodont or lophodont. Antennula 5-segmented. Exopodal seta on antenna well developed with complicated gland at its inner end. Respiratory plate of mandibula reduced, palp weak and slender. Palps and endites of maxillula also show different stages of reduction. Respiratory plate with 2 anteriorly directed setae. Thoracopods slender and of different lengths. Kneebristle in male strong. Lips cone-like, projecting, and increasingly fused into sucking disk within family.
