Widespread between latitudes of about 40ºN and 40ºS and at depths of 0–1350 m.

Diagnosis

Carapace without lateral process. Second antenna: 2-segmented with long 2nd segment, or 3-segmented with bare 2nd segment, terminal segment with long terminal filament, endopod of both sexes similar. Maxilla: 1st segment of endopod broad with well-developed cutting tooth; exopod large. Sixth limb: 3 to 5 bristles present in place of epipodal appendage; posterior 2 bristles on terminal segment usually longer than remaining ventral bristles. Seventh limb: jaw opposite comb bare or with 1 or more low teeth; limb with 25–50 bristles. Furca: each lamella with 9 to 11 claws, claw 2 either fused to lamella or separated from it by suture, remaining claws with basal suture.
