Compiler and date details

May 2012 - Peter Davie, Queensland Museum, Brisbane

Introduction

The family Psalidopodidae comprises a single genus and species of pelagic, deep water shrimp. It is unusually spiny, but is most remarkable in having both fingers of the chela of the first two pairs of pereiopods movable and scissor-like.

Diagnosis

Carapace and abdomen spinous; rostrum very long. Pereiopods without exopods. First and second pairs of pereiopods with both fingers of chela movable and scissor-like. Second pair of pereiopods with carpus entire, not articulate; terminating in imperfect chela hidden in dense tuft of setae. First maxilliped with exopod not terminating distally in broad, semi-detached lobe; with endite not overreaching exopod; exopod without lash or prominent caridean lobe. Second maxilliped with segments arranged in usual serial manner; bearing exopod. Third maxilliped slender, pereiopod-like, not broad or operculate, with exopod. Mandible with sharply conical incisor process, deeply separated from molar process; with palp. First maxilla with distal endite not unusually large, proximal endite not reduced. Second maxilla with distal endite mesially bilobate; proximal endite not incised near distal margin; palp distinct; scaphognathite subtriangularly produced proximally. (Derived from Chace 1992).
