Introduction
The Pelecorhynchidae are represented in Australia by the single genus Pelecorhynchus, containing 31 species. Pelecorhynchus adults are nectar feeders that can be encountered in sunny, open conditions where they almost exclusively visit Leptospermum flowers (Mackerras & Fuller 1942).
Mackerras and Fuller (1942) collected larvae from muddy situations and raised several of them in the laboratory, feeding them on earthworms, which they assumed were the natural prey.
