Species Otobius megnini (Dugès, 1884)

Introduction

Some 20th century authors reported that Otobius megnini occured in Australia (for example, Sonenshine et al. 1966; Hoogstraal 1973). These records appear to be derived from Kingston (1936), who reported this species on Australian horses in India. That record has been misinterpreted to mean that these specimens of O. megnini originated from Australia. Keirans & Pound (2003) reviewed these records, and concluded that O. megnini did not occur in Australia. However, this species has recently been found on horses near Perth (Mayberry 2003), so its presence in Australia is confirmed. Barker & Walker (2014) reviewed the biology and morphology of this species in detail.
