Introduction
The Oxynotidae comprises a single genus and five species worldwide; one species occurs in Australian waters. Members of the Oxynotidae have been previously placed in the Dalatiidae (see Hoese & Gates 2006) or the Squalidae. The single Australian species is treated in White (2008) and Last & Stevens (2009). Other species are treated in Compagno et al. (2005). Species generally have a limited distribution in Australia, New Zealand, the eastern and western Atlantic and north-west Pacific.
Oxynotids are distinctive in having a peculiarly compressed and hump-backed body that is triangular in cross-section. They live near the bottom, on the continental shelf and slope in depths of 50 to 1000 m. Species vary in size from 50-90 cm.
