Introduction

Members of this family of shrimps are remarkable for their very elongate eyestalks. A single genus is recognised, Ogyrides Stebbing, and two species are known from Australian waters.

 

Diagnosis

Rostrum greatly reduced. Eyes unusually elongate, reaching nearly to distal end of antennular peduncle. First pair of pereiopods about as robust as second pair; distinctly chelate. Second pair of pereiopods with carpus subdivided into four articles. First maxilliped with exopod far removed from endite. Second maxilliped with segments arranged in usual serial manner; bearing exopod; endopod 4-segmented. Mandible usually with incisor and molar processes and palp. Second maxilla with palp; endite well developed. (Derived from Chace 1992).
