Introduction

This species was recorded in Australia by Kay and Brown (1992) who found it on rice stubble at Mareeba in the wet tropics of North Queensland and in rice fields and Leersia hexandra Schwarz (Poaceae) in the Burdekin River Irrigation Area in the north brigalow belt of Queensland. It has subsequently also been found in SE Queensland. It is well known in SE Asia from the Philippines to India (Ghauri 1971).

Ecological Descriptors

All stages: phloem feeder (associated flora: Oryza sativa L. [POACEAE] Rice; Leersia hexandra Swartz [POACEAE]).

 

Diagnosis

Of the three species found in Australia, N. malayanus has the vertex little longer in the centre than against the eyes and with very fine marginal transverse black markings. The other species either have the vertex clearly longer in the centre than against the eyes (N. virescens) or with a broad black transverse band (N. nigropictus).
