Family NEMATOCARCINIDAE Smith, 1884

Introduction

This family of shrimps seems to occur in all tropical and temperate seas, and as far south as 71ºS in the Weddell Sea off Antarctica. Nematocarcinids are typically demersal, in depths ranging from 51 to 3931 metres (Chace 1986). Holthuis (1993: 79) gave a key to the three genera recognised in the family. Only two, Nematocarcinus and Lipkius, are recorded from Australia. Burokovsky (2000a–g) recently revised many of the Nematocarcinus species extensively.

Diagnosis

Rostrum immovable, attached to remainder of carapace, laterally compressed, narrow in lateral aspect; carapace relatively smooth, not strongly sculptured; antennular flagella simple, without accessory branches; mandible with palp, molar and incisor processes deeply separated; first maxilliped with flagellum on exopod; second maxilliped with terminal segment applied as narrow strip to penultimate segment; third maxilliped elongate, not unusually expanded, 5-segmented, bearing well-developed exopod and strap-like epipod; four anterior pairs of pereiopods with exopods and strap-like epipods lacking endpiece extending vertically into branchial chamber, two anterior pairs with well-developed chela and undivided carpus, three posterior pairs unusually long, with carpus several times as long as propodus; pleopods with appendix interna. (After Chace 1986).
