In Australia it has not been possible to reliably distinguish Mythimna formosana (Butler) and M. semicana (Pagenstecher, 1900) without dissecting the genitalia. The third described species in the species complex is M. pseudoformosana (Robinson, 1975). This last species is curious in that the female genitalia are similar to those of M. formosana (Butler) while the male genitalia are similar to those of M. semicana (Pagenstecher). Further study is needed on this complex)
