Mythimna convecta (Walker, 1857) is represented in the series of mixed syntypes of the species Leucania extranea Guenée, 1852. Franclemont (1951) designated a lectotype for L. extranea Guenée which restricted the application of the name to an American species. This has been accepted by Poole (1989). Guenée (1852a) in his original description separated Australian specimens as var. B. Viette (1951) designated a lectotype from Montevideo for this species. However he also designated a lectotype for var. B from Australia. Var. B has no nomenclatural standing and the designation of an Australian specimen for L. extranea Guenée var. B cannot be considered valid. The name is excluded from the Australian list. The question of which designation, Franclemont (1951) or Viette (1951) is the earlier and so has priority has not been resolved)
