Diagnosis

Myrmecoscopus resembles other genera in the Pogonoscopini in general appearance and coloration and in having small eyes. It differs from them in being considerably smaller in size and in retaining features lost in representatives of other genera. Thus, the labium is shorter (reaching to the middle coxae only), the face of the head is not elongate and the antennal ledges are prominent. Furthermore, although no tibial spurs are retained, tibial spines, which are characteristic of species in all other genera, are lacking (Evans 1966).
