Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy
- Thomson, J.M. 1997. The Mugilidae of the world. Memoirs of the Queensland Museum 41(3): 457-562 fig. 1 [533] (regards Mugil compressus Günther, 1861 as a synonym of Liza grandisquamis with type locality probably wrong, a West African species; however, J. Ghasemzadeh, pers. comm., places the species here)

Introduction
The species dussumieri and subviridis were described in the same publication and the both names have been used for the current species. It is not apparent who acted as first reviser in selecting the name that should take precedent by indicating synonymy. We follow recent works using the name Liza subviridis.
Thomsom (1997) regarded Moolgarda pura as a junior synonym based on examination of paratypes. However, it appears that the holotype belonged to a different species, previously referred to as Valamugil seheli, now placed in Moolgarda (see Senou 2002 and Kottelat 2013).
