Introduction

The order Gonorhynchiformes contains three suborders: the Chanoidei (Chanidae), the Gonorhynchoidei (Gonorhynchidae) and the Knerioidei (Kneriidae, Phractolaemidae) (Wiley & Johnson 2010). Fink & Fink (1996) discussed relationships. Grande & Poyato-Ariza (1999) and Poyato-Ariza et al. (2010) also discussed relationships and reviewed fossil and recent taxa. Nelson (2006) previously recognised two subfamilies, and provided a summary of recent work and demonstrated monophyly of the group. Members of the suborders Chanoidei and Gonorhynchoidei are found in Australian waters, and are not treated at the subordinal level here.
