Introduction

This large, orange and black species is by far the largest cercopoid in Australia and quite distinctive in appearance. It is a southern extension of a genus well represented in Indonesia and New Guinea.

All stages: xylem feeder.

 

Diagnosis

Cercopis nigra, nitida; facie, tibiis tarsisque et elytri singuli maculis tribus ad basim rufo aurantiacis; elytrorum macula intermedia triangulari nigro unipunctata. Longueur 10 lig. Noire, brilllante. Partie antérieure de la tête d'un roux pâle; élytres ayant chacune vers leur base trois taches d'un roux-orangé; la plus voisine de l'écusson longue, ovale; l'interméaire triangulaire, portant un point noir; celle du bord extérieur petite, ovale. Pattes rousses avec les quatre cuisses postérieures noires ainsi que l'écusson. Femelle (Le Peletier & Serville 1825).

Length male, 17.5 mm, female 19 mm. Head and thorax black. Tegmen proximally orange with an interrupted transverse black fascia, remainder black. Male genitalia illustrated (Evans 1966)
