Family MICROPHTHALMIDAE
Introduction
The subfamily Microphthalminae was proposed for two genera, Hesionides and Microphthalmus, both of which were considered members of the Hesionidae at the time (Hartmann-Schröder, 1971). Subsequent studies identified that neither of the aforementioned genera actually belong in the Hesionidae (Pleijel, 1998; Pleijel & Gustavsson, 2010), and that a new status for the Microphthalminae might be required. Following recent phylogenetic analyses, Salazar-Vallejo et al. (2019) redefined the the Microphthalminae and elevated it to family rank, while prosing a new genus, a new species, and redescribing the type species for both Hesionella and Struwela.
