Family MENTHIDAE Chamberlin, 1930
Compiler and date details
Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia
Introduction
The Menthidae are a small family of only four genera, restricted to desert or coastal regions in disparate regions of the world. The family was revised by Harvey & Muchmore (1990) who recognised eight species, only one of which is known from Australia. Subsequently, Harvey (2006) added another species of Thenmus from NW Western Australia.
Diagnosis
Menthids are easily distinguished from olpiids by the presence of three extra trichobothria on the fixed chelal finger and hand, the lack of a venom apparatus in the movable chelal finger, and by the condylar articulation joint between coxae II and III.
