Family LONGIPEDIIDAE Boeck, 1865

Compiler and date details

31 May 2007 - G.K. Walker-Smith & K. Chilton-Lahey

Introduction

Past authorship of the Longipediidae has been attributed to Sars, 1903 (Lang 1948; Bodin 1997) and Brady, 1880 (Huys & Boxshall 1991; Huys et al. 1996). However, Boeck (1865) in his diagnosis of Longipediidae (which he established as one of the eight 'Afdelinger' within the family Harpactidae), clearly intended to regard Longipedia as the type of a new subfamily (p. 252). Today, 'Afdeling', would be regarded as a family-group name, probably of the rank of subtribe (with suffix -ina). In accordance with the Principle of Coordination applied to family-group names (ICZN Art. 36.1) Boeck (1865) should be considered as the authority of the family Longipediidae as authorship and date remain unchanged at every rank. Longipediidae is a monogeneric family with 11 species world-wide. One genus and two species are recorded for the Australian fauna.

Database Notes

Family namy incorrectly attributed to Sars, 1903 by Lang, 1948 and Bodin, 1997.
