Diagnosis

Carapace elongate in lateral view, conspicuously sexually dimorphic (carapace of male longer and more elongate than in the female). In dorsal view anterior end often beak-shaped; left valve overlapping RV posteriorly. Valves often with more or less developed tubercles. Marginal pore canals unbranched. Hemipenis with 3 uropodal setae, lower ramus consisting of lateral process and prominent, hook-shaped process; upper ramus either reduced to elongate tentacle or completely absent, movable trabecule.
