Family LIMNOCYTHERIDAE Sars, 1925

Introduction

The family comprises about 150-200 extant species. It is subdivided into two subfamilies: Limnocytherinae and Timiriaseviinae.

 

Diagnosis

Terminal aesthetasc of antennula basally fused with neighbouring seta. Antenna leg-shaped, with distinct knee joint and 3 terminal claws. Terminal segment of all 3 thoracopods (walking legs) fused with terminal claw, thoracopods thus appearing 4-segmented; terminal claw often with basal seta. Male copulatory tube very short.
