Family LEPTESTHERIIDAE Daday, 1923

Compiler and date details

11 August 2010 - Gary C. B. Poore

Introduction

The single species in this family from Australia was previously treated as Eoleptestheria ticinensis (Balsamo-Crivelli, 1859) however Padhye & Rabet (2023) assigned Australian records to the genus Leptestheria as a new species L. timmsi. This was based on an earlier molecular study of the Spinicaudate by Schwentner et al. (2020) that showed Australian specimens of "Eoleptestheria ticinensis" to be much more closely related to Leptestheria rubidgei (Baird, 1862) than European specimens, which were found to be closely related to Magrebestheria maroccana Thiéry, 1988 from Morocco. As noted by Schwentner et al. (2020) the Spinicaudata are in need of revision.
