Introduction
Diplostraca were defined morphologically by Olesen (2007, 2009) and are strongly supported by molecular analysis most recently by Schwentner et al. (2017). Diplostraca includes all extant branchiopod groups that have a bivalved carapace, although some cladocerans have lost it secondarily. A bivalved, enclosing carapace has evolved independently several times in the Crustacea (Rogers, 2024).
