Introduction
Lonchaeidae are a medium-sized family of flies with at least 500 species described worldwide. Currently 25 species in four genera are described for the Australian fauna. Important publications for this family include J.F. McAlpine (1956) — a treatment of the genus Silba, J.F. McAlpine (1964 — 2 parts) — many Australian species descriptions, J.F. McAlpine (1975) — key to males of genus Lonchaea including Australian species, and J.F. McAlpine & Steyskal (1982) — a key to world genera.
Immature stages are known to be associated with damaged or diseased plant material, being either primary or secondary invaders. Some species are considered to be an agricultural pest, having been associated with decaying fruit and vegetables. Blacket and Malipatil (2010) provide a comprehensive summary of the pest species Lamprolonchaea brouniana, including a key to Australian Lamprolonchaea species.
