Family LANCEOLIDAE Bovallius, 1887

Introduction

The family Lanceolidae comprises five genera of deep-water hyperiideans, usually living below 1000 m depth. Vinogradov et al. (1982) placed Paralanceola in the family Archaeoscinidae. Bowman & Gruner (1973) provided a key to the world genera; more recent keys to the world genera and species are found in Vinogradov et al. (1982; in Russian). Lanceolids have been only recently recorded from Australian waters (Zeidler 1992). Little is known about the biology of these crustaceans. Lanceola sayana was reported in association with a medusa (Laval 1990).
