Introduction

Hyperiideans are zooplanktonic amphipods found throughout the world's oceans. Based on the works of Laval (1980), all hyperiideans are considered to be parasitic at some stage of their life histories. About 120 species are currently known from Australian waters. This is about half of the world fauna. According to Zeidler (pers. comm.) most of the world species will be recorded here when the deep-water hyperiidean fauna of Australia is finally collected and studied. The majority of Australian hyperiidean species have been recorded by Zeidler in a series of papers published between 1978 and 1999. The higher level classification of hyperiideans was stablised by Bowman & Gruner (1973). Recently Vinogradov et al. (1982) produced a world monograph to all species. No published phylogenetic studies have tested the current ideas about relationships in this group.

The hyperiidean diagnostic descriptions are based on diagnoses generated from a DELTA (Dallwitz et al. 1993, 1998) database of Australian amphipod families. Each diagnosis contains the complete set of diagnostic characters for all hyperiidean families. Character states in bold text refer to the unique combination of characters which will define each family against all others. Unless indicated otherwise, the following attributes are implicit throughout these descriptions, except where the characters concerned are inapplicable.

Diagnosis

Maxilla 1 present; inner plate present; palp present. Maxilla 2 present; inner plate present. Pereonites pleurae absent. Coxae 1–7 well developed, none fused with pereonites. Gnathopod 1 dactylus large. Gnathopod 2 dactylus well developed. Pereopods none prehensile; 3–7 without hooded dactyli. Pereopod 7 with 7 articles. Pleonites 1–3 without dorsal carina. Urosomite 3 not fused with telson. Uropod 1 biramous. Uropod 2 well developed. Uropod 3 peduncle with medial process.
