Subfamily Kraussiinae Ng, 1993

Introduction

Ng (1993) followed Guinot (1977, 1979) in treating Kraussia Dana, 1852 (and his newly described Palapedia) as xanthid in affinities. Guinot had earlier cited significant differerences in the sterna and male gonopods as the reasons for removing Kraussia from the Thiidae Dana, where previously the genus had been placed.

Diagnosis

Carapace dorsal surfaces evenly and moderately convex longitudinally and laterally, regions poorly defined anteriorly, otherwise indistinct or absent; frontal margin strongly to weakly quadrilobate (sometimes appearing bilobed); anterolateral margin strongly arcuate, serrated, lined with sharp granules or spines; posterolateral margin converging; antennules folding obliquely; sternum moderately elongate to very elongate, sternal sutures 2/3 and 3/4 shallow but complete, inner margins of male episternite 7 may be lamelliform, forming episternal bracket for margins of fused male abdominal segments 3–5. Ambulatory legs short, laterally compressed, especially distal segments; dactyli of all four pairs of legs strongly flattened laterally, spade-like, sickle-shaped, curving upwards. Male first gonopod long, slender, distal part with long hairs; second gonopod short, with distinct distal and basal segments. (After Ng 1993).
