Genus Kababina Davies, 1995

Introduction

The cribellate genus Kababina comprises nine species, all from rainforests of the wet tropics of northern Queensland. Little is known of the spiders’ biology, except they appear to be litter dwellers. Kababina is one of four genera comprising the subfamily Kababininae (Davies 1999). Kababina was originally tentatively placed in the family Amphinectidae and despite this placement being retracted by Davies (1999), the clade of genera remained in that family because no alternative placement was suggested. Successive phylogenies found that Stiphidion facetum Simon was the sister taxon to the Kababininae (Davies 1999, 2000a, 2000b). Despite low support for this relationship and poor definition of the family, the subfamily of four genera was transferred to Stiphidiidae by Gray and Smith (2008) as a more suitable placement than Amphinectidae.
