Tribe Issini Stål, 1866
Compiler and date details
11 April 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher
- Issida Stål, C. 1866. Hemiptera Homoptera Latr. Hemiptera Africana 4: 1-276 [202].
Type genus:
Issus Fabricius, 1803.
Introduction
Metcalf (1958) credited this tribe to Fieber (1866) but Fieber (1866: 75) credits it as "Issida Stal, Subf. Hem. af. p. 202". However, as noted by Gnezdilov & Fletcher (2010), the tribal classification of the Issidae needs to be re-examined. This is partly due to the current classification being based on features such as the shape and venation of the hindwing which can vary within genera and are therefore not sufficiently stable to provide the basis for a higher classification. Gnezdilov & Fletcher (2010) placed the Australian fauna entirely in this tribe (incorrectly crediting it to Spinola) and regarded it as being a monophyletic derivative of the Oriental Issidae.
Diagnosis
As noted by Gnezdilov & Fletcher (2010), the higher classification of the Issidae needs to be re-examined. Since all Australian taxa are placed in the same tribe, no diagnosis is considered necessary here.
