Introduction

This is the largest species of the genus and widely distributed in the northern parts of the continent from Broome in Western Australia through the Northern Territory and Queensland down to the Macleay River on the north coast of New South Wales. Specimens at Howard Springs in the Northern Territory were being tended by green ants (Oecophylla smaragdina (Fabricius).

Ecological Descriptors

All stages: gregarious, myrmecophilous, phloem feeder (associated flora: Melaleuca sp. [MYRTACEAE]; Grevillea sp. [PROTEACEAE]).

 

Diagnosis

Caput griseum, apice dilatatum, rotundatum, fronte plana, laevi. Thorax griseus, lineis duabus dorsalibus nigris. Scutellum acutum. Elytra grisea, fascia in medio lata, hyalina. Alae fuscae. Abdominis latera subtus dilatata, deflexa, fornicata. (Fabricius 1775).

Head and pronotum pale testaceous, the vertex and pronotum strongly clouded with blackish brown, without definite spots. Scutellum pale castaneous. Underside and the tergites pallid, pleural region more or less crimson. Tibiae, tarsi and apical parts of femora more or less blackish brown. Tegmina hyaline, basal fourth clouded with black, two narrow transverse stripes and apex of corium blackish-brown. Male: Valve in profile elongate, rounded apically. Frons clouded also with black. Clypeus black. Female: Last abdominal segment more or less straight medianly; valve long, depressed in a wedge shaped manner at the base. Length: (male) 7½; (female) 9½ mill; breadth across eyes 4¼–5 mill (Kirkaldy 1906, as Ipo ambita).
