Introduction

The tribe Tanypleurini was created by Jeannel (1949) for a number of genera from the Afrotropical, Oriental, and Neotropical Regions. Park (1951) further subdivided this group by proposing two new subtribes, Dalmodina and Iniocyphina from the Neotropical Region, and Jeannel (1959) later added the Globina, based on two genera from Africa and the Neotropical Region. Recently it was discovered that the name of the type genus of the tribe (Tanypleurus Raffray) was preoccupied (Newton & Thayer 1992), and a new generic name, Natypleurus Newton and Thayer, was proposed for this genus. Since Tanypleurini was no longer available due to the invalidation of the genus that it was based on, Iniocyphini Park was chosen as the tribal name from the two oldest available family-group names. The new subtribe name based on Natypleurus, Natypleurina Newton & Thayer (1992), is now used for those genera formerly placed in the subtribe Tanypleurina (Chandler 2001: 347).

The pantropical Iniocyphini currently holds 36 genera.

Diagnosis

Head with antennomeres I short; ocular-mandibular carinae variably present; with two gular foveae. Pronotum lacking paranotal carinae, rounded laterally. Elytra usually lacking subhumeral foveae and marginal striae, marginal striae never prominent when present. Metacoxae only slightly projecting at articulations with metatrochanters. Visible tergite 1 (IV) with base flat; visible sternite 2 (IV) with basolateral sulci variably present; sternite 1 (III) clearly visible, usually nearly as long as or longer than 2 (IV) at midline (cf Fig. 16). Legs with single tarsal claw, lacking posterior tarsal claws.
