Introduction
The Goniaceritae currently holds 15 tribes, and 260 genera are placed here. Representatives of four tribes are found in Australia, with only one of these, the Brachyglutini, being diverse there. The other three tribes are each represented by three genera (Iniocyphini and Proterini), or one genus (Cyathigerini) (Chandler 2001: 289).
Diagnosis
Head with ventral apices of antennal scapes straight on ventral margins, dorsal margins usually straight. Abdomen with lateral margins angulate, paratergites distinct, or lateral margins rounded with paratergites variably smoothly fused to tergites and sternites. Trochanters of second and third pairs of legs with angle of joint to femora acute, dorsal extension of femora close to coxal articulations; metacoxae widely separated (contiguous or close in Speleobamini, and in the Baradina and some Eupseniina of the Brachyglutini); tarsal claws unequal, with posterior claws lacking or setiform, usually not visible; first tarsomeres short, second and third tarsomeres elongate, second tarsomeres as long as or longer than third tarsomeres. Aedeagus symmetric or nearly so (Proterini, and some genera of Tychini and Brachyglutini have strongly asymmetric aedeagi), parameres present and usually symmetric; median lobe with internal musculature and dorsal diaphragm for some members of most tribes.
ID Keys
Key to Australian tribes of Goniaceritae (Chandler 2001: 289).
1. With seven antennomeres, very large apical antennomeres XI forming club; abdominal tergites visible in dorsal view fused into single plate (Fig. 143) … Cyathigerini
With 10-11 antennomeres, antennal club variable, formed by apical 1-3 antennomeres, last segments never remarkably large; at least three tergites visible in dorsal view … 2
2. (1) Elytra with distinct subhumeral foveae (Fig. 1, shef), prominent marginal striae extending posteriorly from subhumeral foveae to elytral apices carinate; lateral margins of pronotum often carinate hear base (Fig. 140) … Proterini
Elytra rarely with subhumeral foveae, if marginal striae present then ventral margins of striae at most slightly produced; lateral margins of pronotum rounded … 3
3. (2) Abdomen with first visible sternite (III) short, often barely visible between metacoxal bases and laterally, second visible sternite (IV) much longer than first (Fig. 12); ocular-mandibular carinae present … Brachyglutini
Abdomen with first visible sternite (III) easily seen posterior to metacoxae, at least half as long as second sternite (IV) at midline, frequently subequal in length (Fig. 16); ocular-mandibular carinae often lacking (Fig. 137) … Iniocyphini
