  Type species:

   Raja sephen uarnak Forsskål, 1775 by subsequent designation, see Jordan, D.S. & Evermann, B.W. 1896. The fishes of North and middle America: a descriptive catalogue of the species of fish-like vertebrates found in the waters of North America, north of the Isthmus of Panama. Bulletin of the United States National Museum 47(1): 1-1240 [82] (type species as Raja Uárnak).

 

Introduction

Fricke (2008) regarded the name of the type species as vernacular Arabic and not an available name, and that the name was made available by Gmelin (1789) and should take authorship from that publication. However, in the index on page viii of Forsskål (1775), the name is used as a variety "Uarnak", but written Uárnak as Arabic vernacular on p. 18. Tentatively, we regard the usage of Forsskål as an infraspecific name in the index, meeting requirements for authorship under Article 45.6.4.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. The name has been attributed to him consistently in the literature.
