Genus Eviota Jenkins, 1903

Greenies

Introduction

The genus is one of the largest gobioid genera known, with over 110 species currently recognised (Greenfield et al. (2018). Recent genetic studies have shown that many species are not as widely distributed as previously thought and some names of Australian species will probably change in the near future. Several species of unknown identity are known from Australia and other parts of the Indo-west-central Pacific region.

Misidentifications

GOBIIDAE: Eviota albolineata Jewett & Lachner, 1983 — Greenfield, D.W. & Randall, J.E 2010. GOBIIDAE: Eviota nigriventris Giltay, 1933 — Greenfield, D.W. & Randall, J.E. 2011. Two new Indo-Pacific species in the Eviota nigriventris complex (Teleostei: Gobiidae). Zootaxa 2997: 54-66 [60] (little Australian material examined and the species may occur in Australia; Eviota nigriventris is known from Indonesia, not far from Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea and from the Chesterfield Islands in the Coral Sea.); Greenfield, D.W. & Tornabene, L. 2014. Eviota brahmi n. sp. from Papua New Guinea, with a redescription of Eviota nigriventris (Teleostei: Gobiidae). Zootaxa 3793(1): 133-146 [139] (underwater photos show a similar species from Australia, but the identity has not been confirmed from Australia.)

GOBIIDAE: Eviota pellucida Larson, 1976 — Greenfield, D.W. & Suzuki, T. 2012. Eviota atriventris, a new goby previously misidentified as Eviota pellucida Larson (Teleostei: Gobiidae). Zootaxa 3197: 55-62 [61] (restricted to north Pacific, from Japan to Marshall Islands)

GOBIIDAE: Eviota punctulata Jewett & Lachner, 1983 [restricted to Fiji] — Greenfield, D.W., Tornabene, L., Gómez-Buckley, M. & Erdmann, M.V. 2018. Eviota maculosa, a new dwarfgoby from the Western Pacific Ocean (Teleostei: Gobiidae). Journal of the Ocean Science Foundation 31: 18-31
