Introduction

Until recently widely misidentified as Kyphosus sydneyanus.

A specimen of K. gladius collected by Klunzinger (1880)(SMNS 2673) was assumed to be the holotype of Segutilum klunzinger Whitley, 1931 by Sakai & Nakabo (2006). Because Klunzinger’s (1880) original description and illustration do not match the specimen, and because neither Klunzinger (1880) or Whitley (1931) mention a catalogue number, Knudsen & Clements (2013) conclude that Sakai & Nakabo (2006) were unjustified in their assumption, and considered the specimen as a non-type of Kyphosus gladius. See Knudsen & Clements (2013a, 2013b) for further details.
