Coastal and near inland N Australia west to all Kimberley Division, WA—south to Fitzroy, Margaret and upper Ord River drainages, WA, the middle Victoria River drainage, Larrimah, Buckalara Range and China Walls, NT, and Riversleigh and the middle Leichhardt and lower Flinders and Norman Rivers, QLD—and east to all Cape York Peninsula south to upper Gilbert, Lynd and Mitchell Rivers in the west and to Cooktown-Helenvale-Shipton's Flat in the east—also Buccaneer and Bonaparte Archipelagos in Kimberley Division, Melville-Bathurst and Croker Ils, Howard-Elcho-Wessel group, Groote Eylandt and Sir Edward Pellew group, NT, and Wellesley group and most Torres Strait islands, QLD, north to S coast of New Guinea. Intergrades with G. h. headlandi Mathews, 1913 through S Kimberley Division and Dampier Land to Anna Plains (Eighty-Mile Beach), WA, and apparently with G. h. humeralis (Temminck, 1821) across eastern foot of Cape York Peninsula from between upper Gilbert-Lynd-Mitchell and Burdekin Rivers to Cooktown and Mossman, QLD.
