Subtribe Gelastocephalina Emeljanov, 2000
Compiler and date details
11 August 2010 - Murray J. Fletcher
Introduction
This is a paraphyletic assemblage, remaining in the tribe Gelastocephalini after Emeljanov (2000) removed a small group of genera to the subtribe Rhigedanina. Löcker et al. (2006) retained the subtribe, although recognising that it is paraphyletic, simply because the three genera comprising the subtribe Rhigedanina are clearly a valid monophyletic unit.
Diagnosis
Since the subtribe Gelastocephalina is paraphyletic, it can really only be diagnosed by lacking the features which define the subtribe Rhigedanina. These were defined by Löcker et al. (2006) as (1) presence of ear-shaped lobes on the pronotum and (2) presence of large lateral spines on the hind tibia.
