Introduction

Previously two genera were recognised in the Gymnuridae. Currently one genus and 10 species are recognised worldwide (Yokota et al. 2016). A single species is recorded from Australian waters (Last & Stevens 1994, 2009; Compagno 1999; Compagno & Last 1999).

Gymnurids occur in tropical and warm temperate marine waters from the shoreline to a depth of about 75 m. They are distinguished from most other rays by having the disc much broader than long, the tail much shorter than the length of the disc, and the serrated spine on the tail reduced or absent. Some species are of commercial importance. Maximum width for a member of the family is 2.1 m.
