Introduction

The Gnaphosidae are one of the very diverse families in Australia, probably numbering in excess of 500 species, and many genera. They are found primarily in the litter and under bark and until recently included genera now transferred to the Lamponidae and Trochanteriidae which along with the Cithaeronidae, Gallieniellidae and Prodidomidae constitute the superfamily Gnaphosoidea. The Gnaphosidae are a large and complex family that is common in most parts of the world. Existing subfamily classifications are unworkable, although a few subfamilies, such as the Gnaphosinae, Hemicloeinae and Laroniinae, are relatively well diagnosed.
