Introduction

Garypids are small to large pseudoscorpions found in habitats such as leaf litter, under rocks and under bark of trees. The cosmopolitan genus Garypus L. Koch is confined to the marine littoral zone and includes some of the world's largest pseudoscorpions. Currently 10 genera and approximately 75 species are recognised (Harvey 1991); Synsphyronus with 28 species and Garypus with 24 species, are the most diverse.

The Australian fauna is dominated by species of Synsphyronus, which are found in a variety of habitats over much of the country. Garypus and Anagarypus are also present in certain northern regions. Numerous new species of Synsphyronus are represented in museum collections (Harvey, unpublished data).

Diagnosis

Garypids are the only garypoids which lack a stigmatic helix.
