Introduction

The family Lactariidae currently comprises a single species from the tropical Indo-west Pacific (Leis 1999; Nelson 2006), including Australia. Leis (1994) described the larvae and discussed relationships of the family.

The milk or false trevally is a pelagic marine fish found primarily in coastal waters. It has large eyes and resembles carangids, but lacks the two detached spines in front of the anal fin. Maximum length for the family is 28 cm.
