Ecological Descriptors

Carnivorous, marine, neritic.

 

Diagnosis

Umbrella sub-campaniform, marked with an interior cross; slightly festooned edge; peduncle short, finished by a thick capillary arm bundles; hyalino-bluish color; the edge and arms fawn.

 

Notes

Péron & Lesueur (1810) described a medusa named Evagora capillata from Endracht's Land (Shark Bay); they did not publish their figures, but the illustration of E. capillata was later published by de Blainville (1834: plate 35, fig. 3, as Evagore chevelue).

The medusa is not recognizable as any modern species. It was figured as having a very high bell-shaped umbrella, with three long, finger-like gastro-gonadal pouches visible in the illustrated half. The margin of the umbrella is slightly wavy, and is set off from the rest of the bell by a shallow furrow. At least 11 oral arms are figured, each with a prominent lateral flare at the top, tapering to a point below.
