Introduction

The genus Eumetopina Breddin includes eight described species distributed primarily in the Oriental region with two species in Africa and one known to be established in Australia. The Island Sugarcane Planthopper, Eumetopina flavipes Muir, which is common in Papua New Guinea and a vector there of Ramu stunt of sugarcane, has been recorded on several islands in Torres Strait and on the tip of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland.

Diagnosis

"Caput cum oculis pronoti latitudine postica vix angustius, vertice haud porrecto et oculos paullo superante, transverso , singulo oculo multo latiore, antice leviter rotundato , duabus instructo cellulis quinquangularibus , magnis, oculos antice superantibus , quae duas carinulas perbreves ad marginem verticis anticum teretem emittunt. Frons latissima, fere aeque longa ac mox infra oculos lata, carinis lateralibus arcuatis, carina media unica, tenuissima, infra omnino evanescente. Clypeus carina destitutus, cum fronte leviter convexus. Antennarum articulus primus articuli secundi dimidio vix longior. Pronotum trapezoideum, postice angulatim emarginatum, medio quam caput distincte longius, tricarinatum, carinis lateralibus divergentibus, postice abbreviatis , mesonoti carinis tribus postice leviter divergentibus. Tegminum area basalis sectoribus tribus, quorum posterior multo ante sectorem anteriorem furcatus est; cellula igitur angusta inter ramos sectoris posterioris posita duplo longior quam ea inter ramos sectoris anterioris. Genus fronte lata, rotundata , infra carina destituta facile distinguendum." (Breddin 1896).
