Compiler and date details

8 March 2012 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This is a large tribe of microleafhoppers with about 70 genera, many of which are divided into species-rich subgenera. The tribe is distributed world-wide and includes a number of economically important species. The Australian fauna, which is relatively depauperate, is dominated by the genus Austroasca Lower with seven species including A. viridigrisea (Paoli), the vegetable leafhopper, a known pest of leafy and other vegetables and A. alfalfae (Evans) which has a wide host range including lucerne. The tribe also includes the Australian cotton leafhopper, Amrasca terraereginae (Paoli). A number of species of Empoascini are considered to be quarantine threats to Australia, including Oriental species of Amrasca. A list of genera, subgenera and species plus a key to the world genera of Empoascini is available by searching the 3i database at http://ctap.inhs.uiuc.edu/dmitriev/index.asp [accessed 8.iii.2012]
