Introduction

Mell (1943) raised the subfamily Eligminae to house Eligma Hübner, Selepa Moore and several other genera.
The family placement of Eligma was unresolved, with Holloway (2003) considering it unplaced within the Noctuoidea. Kitching & Rawlins (1998) followed Speidel et al. (1996) in treating it as a monobasic subfamily including only Eligma associated with the Nolidae, which was supported by Jacobsen & Weller (2002). Zahiri et al. (2011, 2013) confirmed this placement, and Holloway (2011) included genera which had been erroneously included in the Collomeninae in Holloway (2003), reverting to the original concept of Mell (1943). The majority of Australian species had been included in the Sarrothripinae by Edwards (1996).
